Who am I? Here are some of my stories:

  • I am a father to two, and husband to one.

  • I am a Teacher.

  • The human side of software fulfills me; the software side fascinates me.

  • My greatest satisfaction is helping people change their stories of who they are in ways that make them more effective.

  • I no longer know what "justice" is, so I'm left with just "compassion."

Currently I'm a staff member in the University of Washington's Computer Science & Engineering department. I work as a project manager on the UrbanSim project (http://www.urbansim.org). My home page is http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/socha/.

I've also taught the upper-level undergraduate Software Engineering course at the University of Washington in an experiential way: experiential workshops, including several by people of the AYE community; having all (24-29) students work on a single project together; teaching with my mouth shut; facilitating and coaching when breakdowns occurred; retrospectives; journal writing for first and last 5 minutes of each class. It worked better than I had hoped, and became as real world as I could imagine for an academic class. See TeachingInexperiencedPeople for SteveSmith's perspective on the experience from the Summer 2002.
