I used to be heavily into the technical side of software but now I'm more and more interested in the problems I see my clients having which are invariably non-technical. At the moment I'm particularly interested in Systems Thinking. I'm also working on a game to help software developers do deliberate practice. Like TobiasFors I got started on this route by reading some books by an author called Gerald Weinberg. Ever heard of him? This will be my first AYE conference. This wiki is great but if you want to edit a long page it's a pain having to scroll all the way down to the bottom, click the button, then scroll all the way down again. Could it's effectiveness by amplified by having an edit button at the top as well as the bottom? How about a simple double click of the mouse being another way to open up an edit? Something like <body ondblclick="document.location='http://.....'"> perhaps? *DNA = Douglas Noel Adams 17th Sept 2009 Jon, Welcome! I'm pleased that you joined our community. SteveSmith 2009.09.18 Jon, I'm really pleased that you're coming to AYE. I'm a fan of your posts (not only because you say nice things about my books). - JerryWeinberg 2009.09.18 Thanks Steve and Jerry. I'm really looking forward to it. Any tips on things I might consider doing before the conference that would increase its value to me? And is there anything I can do for you? Oh and a quick question - I assume the four am/pm sessions are concurrent so I'll need to pick one each morning and afternoon...? JonJagger 2009.09.24 Jon, the sessions are concurrent so you will need to choose a single morning and afternoon session, which I know may be difficult. Thank you for the offer to help. Nothing comes to mind now, but if it does I'll contact you. Re: things to do before the conference that has value. I suggest reviewing the recommended reading lists on this wiki for sessions you are considering. And I also suggest reviewing topics on this wiki. There are some great topics that are waiting to be unearthed on the wiki; for instance, AppreciateTheBehaviorYouWant, TeamDysfunction and DealingWiththeMirror. Best regards, SteveSmith 2009.09.27 Jon, One thing I recommend in preparation: To the extent that you can, don't plan to leave partly finished work or personal issues at home. AYErs who spent lots of time on the phone or doing email always say they won't bring tasks with them next time. - JerryWeinberg 2009.10.05 Hi Jon, One thing I learned is not to plan too much about sessions you'll attend prior. . I tried doing that one year but after day 1 after the pre-conference tutorial which I really recommend, it's a getting to know you and a great starter to the conference, is to see what you seems right for you on day 2. I think I planned to attend all the sessions that sounded good in advance of the conference and changed a lot of them once I started learning new things. You'll LOVE AYE and it's a lot warmer then where I come from and you come in November and it is a great environment for learning and fun! I also highly recommend the bar after the sessions (it's where the stories are told!) See you soon!!!! And welcome to AYE 2009!!!! MarjieCarmen 2009-10-11 Thanks for the advice Jerry. I'm pretty good at that. When I'm working for a client I turn my mobile off. I'm reminded of a cartoon where two farmers are leaning against a field gate. The wise old farmer has a mobile and its ringing but he's not answering it. The other farmer (much younger) gets quite bothered by this and asks why the farmer does not answer his phone. The wise old farmer says "I bought this phone for my convenience." Marjie - yes you're right. I wish I could attend the pre-conference tutorial. That would be a good way to meet the speakers before having to decide. JonJagger 2009-10-11 AffluenceOrInfluence JonJagger 2009-10-25 I see a few people have written intro limericks. I'm game...
